Themes from An American in Paris An American in Paris is a jazz-influenced orchestral piece by American composer George Gershwin first performed in 1928. It was inspired by the time that Gershwin had spent in Paris and evokes the sights and energy of the French capital in the 1920s. Walter Damrosch had asked Gershwin to write a full concerto following the success of Rhapsody in Blue (1924). [1] Gershwin scored the piece for the standard instruments of the symphony orchestra plus celesta, saxophones, and automobile horns. He brought back four Parisian taxi horns for the New York premiere of the composition, which took place on December 13, 1928, in Carnegie Hall, with Damrosch conducting the New York Philharmonic. [2] [3] He completed the orchestration on November 18, less than four weeks before the work's premiere. [4] He collaborated on the original program notes with critic and composer Deems Taylor. Background [ edit] Although the story is likely apocryphal, [5] Gershwin is said to have been attracted by Maurice Ravel 's unusual chords, and Gershwin went on his first trip to Paris in 1926 ready to study with Ravel. After his initial student audition with Ravel turned into a sharing of musical theories, Ravel said he could not teach him, saying, "Why be a second-rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin? " [6] That 1926 trip, however, resulted in a snippet of melody entitled "Very Parisienne", [7] that the initial musical motive of An American in Paris, written as a 'thank you note' to Gershwin's hosts, Robert and Mabel Schirmer. Gershwin called it "a rhapsodic ballet"; it is written freely and in a much more modern idiom than his prior works. [8] Gershwin strongly encouraged Ravel to come to the United States for a tour. To this end, upon his return to New York, Gershwin joined the efforts of Ravel's friend Robert Schmitz, a pianist Ravel had met during the war, to urge Ravel to tour the U. S. Schmitz was the head of Pro Musica, promoting Franco-American musical relations, and was able to offer Ravel a $10, 000 fee for the tour, an enticement Gershwin knew would be important to Ravel. [9] [ citation needed] Gershwin greeted Ravel in New York in March 1928 during a party held for Ravel's birthday by Éva Gauthier. [10] Ravel's tour reignited Gershwin's desire to return to Paris which he and his brother Ira did after meeting Ravel. [7] Ravel's high praise of Gershwin in an introductory letter to Nadia Boulanger caused Gershwin to seriously consider taking much more time to study abroad in Paris. Yet after playing for her, she told him she could not teach him. Nadia Boulanger gave Gershwin basically the same advice she gave all of her accomplished master students: "What could I give you that you haven't already got? " [11] [12] This did not set Gershwin back, as his real intent abroad was to complete a new work based on Paris and perhaps a second rhapsody for piano and orchestra to follow his Rhapsody in Blue. Paris at this time hosted many expatriate writers, among them Ezra Pound, W. B. Yeats, Ernest Hemingway; and artist Pablo Picasso. [13] Composition [ edit] Gershwin based An American in Paris on a melodic fragment called "Very Parisienne", written in 1926 on his first visit to Paris as a gift to his hosts, Robert and Mabel Schirmer. He described the piece as a "rhapsodic ballet" because it was written freely and is more modern than his previous works. Gershwin explained in Musical America, "My purpose here is to portray the impressions of an American visitor in Paris as he strolls about the city, listens to the various street noises, and absorbs the French atmosphere. " [12] The piece is structured into five sections, which culminate in a loose ABA format. Gershwin's first A episode introduces the two main "walking" themes in the "Allegretto grazioso" and develops a third theme in the "Subito con brio". [14] The style of this A section is written in the typical French style of composers Claude Debussy and Les Six. [10] This A section featured duple meter, singsong rhythms, and diatonic melodies with the sounds of oboe, English horn, and taxi horns. The B section's "Andante ma con ritmo deciso" introduces the American Blues and spasms of homesickness. The "Allegro" that follows continues to express homesickness in a faster twelve-bar blues. In the B section, Gershwin uses common time, syncopated rhythms, and bluesy melodies with the sounds of trumpet, saxophone, and snare drum. "Moderato con grazia" is the last A section that returns to the themes set in A. After recapitulating the "walking" themes, Gershwin overlays the slow blues theme from section B in the final "Grandioso". Response [ edit] Gershwin did not particularly like Walter Damrosch's interpretation at the world premiere of An American in Paris. He stated that Damrosch's sluggish, dragging tempo caused him to walk out of the hall during a matinee performance of this work. The audience, according to Edward Cushing, responded with "a demonstration of enthusiasm impressively genuine in contrast to the conventional applause which new music, good and bad, ordinarily arouses. " Critics believed that An American in Paris was better crafted than his lukewarm Concerto in F. Some did not think it belonged in a program with classical composers César Franck, Richard Wagner, or Guillaume Lekeu on its premiere. Gershwin responded to the critics, "It's not a Beethoven Symphony, you know... It's a humorous piece, nothing solemn about it. It's not intended to draw tears. If it pleases symphony audiences as a light, jolly piece, a series of impressions musically expressed, it succeeds. " [12] Instrumentation [ edit] An American in Paris was originally scored for 3 flutes (3rd doubling on piccolo), 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets in B-flat, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, triangle, wood block, ratchet, cymbals, low and high tom-toms, xylophone, glockenspiel, celesta, 4 taxi horns labeled as A, B, C and D with circles around them, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, (all saxophones doubling soprano saxophones) and strings. [15] Although most modern audiences have heard the taxi horns using the notes A, B, C and D, it has recently come to light [16] that Gershwin's intention was to have used the notes A ♭ 4, B ♭ 4, D 5, and A 4. [17] It is likely that in labeling the taxi horns as A, B, C and D with circles, he may have been referring to the use of the four different horns and not the notes that they played. A major revision of the work by composer and arranger F. Campbell-Watson simplified the instrumentation by reducing the saxophones to only three instuments, alto, tenor and baritone. The soprano saxophone doublings were eliminated to avoid changing instruments and the contrabassoon was also deleted. This became the standard performing edition until 2000, when Gershwin specialist Jack Gibbons made his own restoration of the original orchestration of An American in Paris, working directly from Gershwin's original manuscript, including the restoration of Gershwin's soprano saxophone parts removed in F. Campbell-Watson's revision; Gibbons' restored orchestration of An American in Paris was performed at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on July 9, 2000 by the City of Oxford Orchestra conducted by Levon Parikian [18] William Daly arranged the score for piano solo which was published by New World Music in 1929. [19] [20] Preservation status [ edit] On September 22, 2013, it was announced that a musicological critical edition of the full orchestral score would be eventually released. The Gershwin family, working in conjunction with the Library of Congress and the University of Michigan, were working to make scores available to the public that represent Gershwin's true intent. It was unknown if the critical score would include the four minutes of material Gershwin later deleted from the work (such as the restatement of the blues theme after the faster 12 bar blues section), or if the score would document changes in the orchestration during Gershwin's composition process. [21] The score to An American in Paris was scheduled to be issued first in a series of scores to be released. The entire project was expected take 30 to 40 years to complete, but An American in Paris was planned to be an early volume in the series. [22] [23] Two urtext editions of the work were published by the German publisher B-Note Music in 2015. The changes made by Campbell-Watson were withdrawn in both editions. In the extended urtext, 120 bars of music were re-integrated. Conductor Walter Damrosch had cut them shortly before the first performance. [24] On September 9, 2017, The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra gave the world premiere of the long-awaited critical edition of the piece prepared by Mark Clague, director of the Gershwin initiative at the University of Michigan. This also featured a restoration of the original 1928 orchestration, except that it upheld the deletion of the contrabassoon part, an alteration usually attributed to F. Campbell-Watson. [25] Recordings [ edit] An American in Paris has been frequently recorded. The first recording was made for the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1929 with Nathaniel Shilkret conducting the Victor Symphony Orchestra, drawn from members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Gershwin was on hand to "supervise" the recording; however, Shilkret was reported to be in charge and eventually asked the composer to leave the recording studio. Then, a little later, Shilkret discovered there was no one to play the brief celesta solo during the slow section, so he hastily asked Gershwin if he might play the solo; Gershwin said he could and so he briefly participated in the actual recording. This recording is believed to use the taxi horns in the way that Gershwin had intended using the notes A-flat, B-flat, a higher D and a lower A. [16] The radio broadcast of the September 8, 1937 Hollywood Bowl George Gershwin Memorial Concert, in which An American in Paris, also conducted by Shilkret, was second on the program, was recorded and was released in 1998 in a two-CD set. Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra recorded the work for RCA Victor, including one of the first stereo recordings of the music. In 1945, Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra recorded the piece for RCA Victor, one of the few commercial recordings Toscanini made of music by an American composer. The Seattle Symphony also recorded a version in 1990 of Gershwin's original score, before he made numerous edits resulting in the score as we hear it today. [26] Harry James released a version of the blues section on his 1953 album One Night Stand, recorded live at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago ( Columbia GL 522 and CL 522). Use in film [ edit] In 1951, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released the musical film An American in Paris, featuring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. Winning the 1951 Best Picture Oscar and numerous other awards, the film was directed by Vincente Minnelli, featured many tunes of Gershwin, and concluded with an extensive, elaborate dance sequence built around the An American in Paris symphonic poem (arranged for the film by Johnny Green), costing $500, 000. LEANNE AT THE END WHAT A LEGEND. He is next conductor of NEW YEAR CONCERT 2017. When "An American in Paris" won the coveted Oscar in 1951 as best picture, much controversy was generated.
The dissatisfaction centered around the fact that the film had a very thin plot and I'm being kind at that. Yes, there was entertainment there, but in a year of "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "A Place in the Sun, the Motion Picture Academy had much better material to work with.
The basic story is a GI Kelly who stays in France after World War 11 ends. There he meets a young, captivating Leslie Caron. The two fall in love and their love is depicted by dancing all over gay Paris. They dance in the streets, they dance on tables-they are all over the place. Enough is enough already.
Georges Guetary and Nina Foch are along for the ride as well as the usual zany Oscar Levant.

It's 8:00 pm, 2/1/17.  And I'm watching Gene Kelley's wonderful dance sequences.  And readily I conclude that Kelly was Michael Jackson's influence.  His super sensational dance creations.  And, yes, the way Kelley's pants reveal his socks and sandals, a definite MJ influence, among many others.  Between the two creative geniuses, I loved Kelly.  He was such a free person, body and soul.  It was in his movements.  The smile.

It is the eighth film in the DC Extended Universe, and a follow-up to Suicide Squad (2016). It was directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, and stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, Ali Wong, and Ewan McGregor. The film follows Harley Quinn as she joins forces with Black Canary, Helena Bertinelli, and Renee Montoya to save Cassandra Cain from Gotham City crime lord Black Mask. Robbie, who also serves as producer, pitched the idea for Birds of Prey to Warner Bros. in 2015. The film was announced in May 2016, with Hodson being hired to write the script that November, while Yan signed on to direct in April 2018. The majority of the cast and crew were confirmed by December 2018. Principal photography lasted from January to April 2019 in Downtown Los Angeles, parts of the Arts District, Los Angeles, and soundstages at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. Additional filming took place in September 2019. Birds of Prey is the first DCEU film and the second DC Films production to be rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America. The film had its world premiere in Mexico City on January 25, 2020, and is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States in IMAX, Dolby Cinema and 4DX on February 7, 2020. Plot After the events of Suicide Squad, the Joker and Harley Quinn have fled back to Gotham. In the midst of their abusive relationship, the Joker breaks up with Harley and kicks her out of their house. Eventually, Harley is taken in by an old man named Doc who owns a Chinese restaurant in the city. After recovering emotionally, Harley goes out clubbing where she spends the night at a club owned by Roman Sionis, a sadistic gangster with cruel tendencies who masquerades as a bubbly nightclub owner. While at the club, Harley meets Dinah Lance, a burlesque singer who works for Roman. Harley becomes intoxicated and acts rowdy in the club, which results in her injuring Roman's driver. Roman's thugs drag Harley outside as a consequence, but Dinah saves her before violence can occur. Impressed by Dinah's skills, Roman appoints her as his new driver. Dinah drops Harley off at the latter's house and Harley decides to remodel her life in many ways, including cutting her hair and adopting a hyena from an exotic pet shop (who she names after Bruce Wayne). Harley also destroys Ace Chemicals, the place where she had pledged herself to Joker before truly becoming Harley Quinn. Meanwhile, Renee Montoya, a police detective in the GCPD, arrives at the scene of Ace Chemicals and determines that because Joker and Harley have broken up, the latter will be easy to capture and arrest. At the same time, Cassandra Cain, a young orphan who works for Sionis as a thief, steals a diamond for him; which has very important information. Roman sends Dinah and his top henchman, a psychotic serial killer named Victor Zsasz, to retrieve it. However, Cass double-crosses him and evades Sionis, hoping to sell the diamond to make more money. Cass is arrested and, out of desperation, swallows the diamond. The following day, Harley is intercepted by Montoya as she walks through Gotham. Harley flees the scene before being ambushed by some of Roman's men. Harley kills her opponents but is captured by other thugs entering the scene. Zsasz and Dinah tell Roman about Cassandra's status. It is shown that Roman likes to wear a black mask – which is an art piece – while torturing people as an intimidation tactic. Dinah and Zsasz also inform him that they captured Harley, and as a result, they have decided to not anticipate retaliation from the Joker, citing Harley's destruction of Ace Chemicals as proof the two have parted ways. Dinah texts Montoya about the situation with Cass, revealing in the process that she is a mole in Roman's organization. Breaking the fourth wall once more, Harley discloses to the audience that they are up-to-date on the events in the film. Harley then overhears Roman talking about the diamond, then offers to retrieve it from Cass if he spares her life. Roman agrees and allots Harley one day. Later, he puts a bounty on Cass's head "to make it more 'fun'". Harley disguises herself and breaks into the GCPD to retrieve Cass. Harley breaks Cass out of the holding cells, and the two flee. Harley brings Cass to an abandoned antique shop where the latter is ordered to excrete the diamond to give it back to Roman. However, the two are ambushed by armed goons who are motivated by the bounty on Cass. Harley proceeds to battle and kills them after inhaling cocaine from a damaged bag. The bounty also attracts Helena Bertinelli, a vigilante known as the "crossbow killer". Helena targets mobsters in the hope of avenging her murdered family and also plans to use Cass with the intent to lure Roman out. Meanwhile, Dinah discovers that she has the metahuman ability to scream at a supersonic level. Dinah texts Montoya about the bounty on Cass, but the text is discovered by Zsasz, who informs Roman. Roman flies into a rage, as he strongly dislikes a subordinate not following orders, and he scratches and damages his face in the process. Harley and Cass decide to hide out at Harley's apartment. However, the apartment is bombed by people looking for Cass and it is revealed that Doc sold Harley out to Roman. Harley calls Roman and agrees to turn Cass over in exchange for protection from the bounty as a result of the lack of trust. Roman sends Zsasz and Dinah to retrieve Cass. Zsasz drugs Harley while showing that Roman didn't honor their deal, and Dinah tries to free Cass. However, Zsasz, having already known about Dinah's treachery, attacks her but is unexpectedly killed by Helena, who arrives at the amusement park. The women are all placed under arrest by Montoya, who Dinah had texted with regard to the situation. Harley manages to convince the women to work together to fight off Roman, even though the others were initially reluctant. The women use Harley's old gear and weapons to attack arriving hordes of Roman's goons, eventually emerging victorious. Cass is captured by Roman, and Harley pursues them to a nearby pier. Once Harley catches up with them, Cassandra puts a grenade in Roman's suit, killing him. In the aftermath of destroying Roman's empire, Montoya, Dinah and Helena start the Birds of Prey with the money from the accounts of the diamond while Harley and Cassandra pawn it and start their own company together. In a post-credits scene, Harley talks about the new Batman film and before the trailer starts, the screen cuts to black. Cast Margot Robbie as Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn: A former psychiatrist who became a crazed criminal and Joker 's accomplice and girlfriend, but has since broken up with him and become a solo vigilante. She is part of the Suicide Squad. [3] Screenwriter Christina Hodson sought to reinvent Harley, wanting to expand on the character following her departure from the Joker. [4] Hodson called Harley the character she enjoyed developing most due to her unpredictable personality. [5] Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli / Huntress: A vigilante who is the orphaned daughter of mafia syndicate gangster, Franco Bertinelli. [6] [7] [8] Ella Mika portrays a young Helena Bertinelli, during flashback scenes. [9] Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Dinah Laurel Lance / Black Canary [6] [7] [10] A vigilante with the metahuman ability of hypersonic screams, who is also a singer in a club that Sionis owns. [11] Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya [12] [13] A Gotham City Police Detective, who is building a case against Sionis. Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz: A deranged serial killer and henchman of Sionis who carves a tally mark on his skin for each victim he claims. [14] Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain: A young girl who has a contract killing placed upon her head by Sionis, after she steals a valuable diamond from him. [12] [15] Ali Wong [16] [14] Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis / Black Mask: A brutal and iron-fisted crime lord who threatens Cassandra. [17] [18] McGregor described the character as "an absolute narcissist". [19] Additionally, Charlene Amoia and Paul Lasa portray Maria and Franco Bertinelli, the mother and father of Helena, respectively. [8] [20] Bojana Novakovic portrays as Erika. Talon Reid portrays one of Black Mask's henchmen. [21] Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, François Chau, Matt Willig, and Robert Catrini have been cast in undisclosed roles. Production Development In May 2016, ahead of the release of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. Pictures announced a spinoff film focusing on Harley Quinn and several other female DC Comics heroes and villains, such as Batgirl and the Birds of Prey. Margot Robbie was attached to reprise her role as Harley Quinn, and would also serve as producer. [3] [22] British screenwriter Christina Hodson was announced to be writing the film in November. [23] Robbie pitched the film to Warner Bros. in 2015 as "an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, 'Harley needs friends. ' Harley loves interacting with people, so don't ever make her do a standalone film". Robbie felt it was important for the film to have a female director. While Warner Bros. and DC Films had various other Harley Quinn-oriented films in development, Birds of Prey was the only one in which Robbie was directly involved with its development. [24] Robbie spent three years working on Birds of Prey and continued to present it to Warner Bros. until the studio felt the project was at the point it could be made. [24] By April 2018, Warner Bros. and DC Films had finalized a deal with Cathy Yan to direct, making her the first female Asian director to direct a superhero film. [25] Robbie was confirmed to be producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, as part of a first look deal she has with the studio; Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkless were also announced to serve as producers through their companies Kroll & Co. Entertainment and Clubhouse Pictures, respectively. Production was scheduled to begin by late 2018 or early 2019. [26] The Penguin was intended to appear in the script at one point, but was dropped to preserve his DC Extended Universe debut in The Batman. [27] Pre-production By July 2018, the film was entering pre-production. [28] Robbie confirmed the film would be titled Birds of Prey, describing it as "different" from the other DC films featuring Harley Quinn, and said it would be produced on a relatively small budget compared to other superhero films. [29] [30] She also stated that Harley Quinn would receive a new costume, and teased the casting of diverse actors. [31] The line-up for the Birds of Prey team was revealed to include Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya, with the villain set to be a Batman adversary who had not yet been seen in film. [12] Casting began in August, [32] with Warner Bros. considering a number of actresses to be cast as Huntress and Black Canary. Alexandra Daddario, Jodie Comer, Blake Lively, and Vanessa Kirby expressed interest. [33] [34] Roman Sionis / Black Mask was revealed to be the film's antagonist. [35] Janelle Monáe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jurnee Smollett-Bell were under consideration for Black Canary by September, while Sofia Boutella, Margaret Qualley, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Cristin Milioti were being considered to play Huntress. [36] Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez tested for Renee Montoya, while Warner Bros. began seeking a 12-year-old Asian actress to play Cassandra Cain. [37] In late September, Smollett-Bell and Winstead were respectively cast as Black Canary and Huntress, [6] Warner Bros. scheduled a February 7, 2020 release date, [38] and Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley were under consideration for the role of Black Mask. [39] During the U. S. -China Entertainment Summit in October, Yan confirmed the cast and that the film would be R-rated. She said that she "could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong and relateable". [40] Cinematographer Matthew Libatique joined the film that month, [41] as did Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. [13] Stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio and fight coordinator Jon Valera joined in November [42] along with McGregor as Black Mask [17] and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. [15] Robbie revealed that the full title would be Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), [43] and that the subtitle reflects the humorous and unserious tone of the film. [44] Production designer K. K. Barrett joined in December, [45] as did Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz. [14] Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, François Chau, Matthew Willig, Robert Catrini, and Ali Wong also joined the film's cast. [16] [14] Filming Principal photography began in Los Angeles, California in January 2019 under the working title Fox Force Five. [46] [47] [48] Although filming was expected to also take place in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, [49] the entire shoot took place in Los Angeles after the production received a tax credit from the state of California. [50] Filming was expected to be completed by mid-April 2019. [51] In February, Charlene Amoia joined the cast. [8] Filming wrapped on April 15, 2019. [52] Post-production Jay Cassidy and Evan Schiff will serve as editors. Method Studios, Weta Digital, Luma Pictures, Image Engine and Crafty Apes will provide the visual effects for the film. [53] [54] [55] [56] In August 2019, Chad Stahelski joined as a second unit director for reshoots. [57] Photography for the additional footage began on September 3, 2019. [58] Music In September 2019, Daniel Pemberton was announced to serve as composer for the film's score. [59] The Original Motion Picture Scores album will be released by WaterTower Music on February 7, to coincides with the film’s release. [60] A soundtrack album for the film, titled Birds of Prey: The Album, was announced in January 2020 and is also scheduled to be released on February 7 by Atlantic Records. To promote the album, a single was released every Friday before the film’s release. [61] " Diamonds " by Megan Thee Stallion and Normani was released on January 10, [62] "Joke's On You" by Charlotte Lawrence was released on January 17, [63], "Boss Bitch" by Doja Cat was released on January 24 and "Sway with Me" by Saweetie and GALXARA was released on January 31. [64] Marketing Marketing began on the January 21, 2019, when a first-look production video of the characters and costumes titled "See You Soon", was released by Warner Bros. via YouTube. [65] DC Comics published a promotional trade paperback anthology featuring stories based on the film on November 12, 2019. [66] The first teaser debuted exclusively in theatres on September 5, 2019, in front of screenings for It: Chapter Two, with Quinn stating that she is "over clowns" while popping a red balloon, in a collective reference to It / Pennywise the Dancing Clown and the Joker. [67] A three-days pop-up events named Harleywood was also organized at the Hollywood and Highland Center with the presence of the cast on the launch day. Artists from the soundtrack where also present to promote the album, with Charlotte Lawrence and Doja Cat performing their songs. [71] It also screened on January 29 at the BFI IMAX in London, and on January 30 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes during a special event named Le Festival de Quinn ( The Quinn's Festival) in reference to the Cannes Film Festival. From Satoshi Kon, the director of Millennium Actress and Perfect Blue, comes the intriguing tale of three homeless people who discover an abandoned baby while foraging through some trash. They keep it overnight, and the following morning decide to track down the baby's parents using a single clue they found. Naturally, they encounter several interesting adventures along the way before reaching the compelling climax.
The story is fresh and exciting, infused with adventure, comedy, and drama. By the end of the film, you really feel a connection with the characters, and only truly good film-making can accomplish that. The dialog is witty and fun, but serious when it needs to be. With such an original storyline, how could a viewer not be pulled in? Of course, the success of this film is really on the shoulders of its animators. And what an amazing job they did! The animation is bold and unique. It captures the beauty and adventure of Japan's capital city with ease. The way the animation seemed so real and lifelike was marvelous, adding another element that only furthered my enjoyment.
The voice acting was also great. Sometimes the voices on anime movies or TV shows can get really irritating, but not in "Tokyo Godfathers. The three main characters are voiced by Toru Emori, Aya Okamoto, and Yoshiaki Umegaki, and they really know what they're doing. Each three use their own talents to the max, and their styles and voices are all so different, that it creates a perfect contrast.
"Tokyo Godfathers" is a near-perfect film. The story is heartwarming, fun, and at times, hilarious. The characters are easy to relate to, but very real. The animation is spectacular, and the acting great. This is a film that I highly recommend to anime fanatics, and anyone else that just loves good animation. Sure its far different from any Disney creation, but it is still a masterpiece in its own right.

This article contains major spoilers for the end of The Turning and of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw.  The Turning is going to frustrate you. There's been plenty of debate already amongst the privileged few (we critics) who got to see it early over whether or not Floria Sigismondi's adaptation of Henry James' gothic ghost story sticks the original novella's purposefully ambiguous ending, but one thing's for sure: It's definitely ambiguous. Whether or not it works, that ambiguity is the whole point of the story.  To understand what's going on in The Turning, you've gotta look back at The Turn of the Screw, James' 1898 horror novella that tells the story of a young governess who takes a position at a giant mansion that houses a housekeeper, an orphaned little girl, and her brother who is away at boarding school for part of the story. While living in the house, the governess starts seeing things, which she realizes must be the ghosts of people who used to live there. Coincidentally, the governess before her had a relationship with a former employee of the mansion, and before their deaths they spent a long time with each other and with both of the children. Spiraling, the governess starts to believe that the spirits of her predecessor and the mysterious man are haunting the house, possessing the children in order to continue their relationship.  The book ends with the governess forcing the little girl to say the name of her former teacher, which the governess believes releases the ghost's hold on her. She attempts to "save" the brother in the same way, but he dies in her arms. And then the book ends! There's never any indication whether the governess was right about any of it, whether there were ghosts at all, or if she was sane the whole time. Since its publication, James' novella has become a standard text for exploring themes of female hysteria in horror. basically, the trope of the woman who seems to know exactly what kind of supernatural shenanigans are going on despite the fact that no one will listen to her. That The Turn of the Screw never outright says whether or not the main character is crazy is part of its appeal.  Recommended Video These Tacos Are Made for Dunking Universal Pictures Which brings us to The Turning, and what director Sigismondi attempts to do to fashion her own ambiguous ending (rather, endings) out of the way she's adapted the story. Early on in the movie, Kate (Mackenzie Davis) says goodbye to her mother (Joely Richardson) who is living in some sort of mental institution, compulsively painting pictures at the bottom of the building's empty swimming pool. This both introduces the mother character for future reference later in the film, and indicates that perhaps there may be some unstable tendencies that the otherwise perfectly normal Kate may have inherited from her family.  Later, after her stint at her governess job living in the mansion has convinced her that spirits are haunting the house and somehow threatening or using the children for their own ends, Kate receives an envelope from her mother of pictures she's painted at her hospital. After looking at them, she has multiple visions of the ghosts, including one that appears to show the man, Quint, raping the former governess Miss Jessel. a revelation that the woman's ghost seems to have been trying to tell Kate this whole time. Absolutely flipping her lid, Kate gathers the children, Flora (an incredibly great Brooklynn Prince) and Miles ( Stranger Things ' Finn Wolfhard) into her car, and guns it for the mansion's front gate. After a tense moment, it opens, and she drives the children through, and they escape into the night.  Except then, the camera zooms out, revealing the headlights of the car as part of Kate's mother's painterly scribbles as Kate holds them in her hand. We're back in that previous scene as Kate trades barbs with the housekeeper, who suggests that maybe her mother's mental illness may be hereditary. In the next scene, Kate confronts Flora and Miles in Quint's room full of creepshots he's taken of other young women who lived in the house. When she demands that the children tell her they can see the ghosts too, they turn on her, berating her until she curls up in a ball at the bottom of the stairs. Then, in what is possibly the third ending, Kate wakes up in a four-poster bed at the bottom of her mother's pool. She gets up and steps over to her mother, who asks her if she saw her pictures before turning around. When Kate sees her face, she screams. Roll credits.  On one hand I admire Sigismondi's commitment to the creeping, dreadful uncertainty of the source material while trying to do a few new things with it. It's the kind of ambiguity we don't get from mainstream films anymore, especially not horror, now that every movie is theorized about and dissected online within days of its debut, angry fans demanding answers to every moment they deem a "plot hole. It's a storytelling style deeply rooted in an older tradition that I'm glad is making a little bit of a comeback, if movies like this and 2015's  Crimson Peak and Park Chan-wook's delightfully cruel 2013 film  Stoker are any indication. On the other hand, watching this/these ending/s play out is like watching the movie give up on itself. The viewer is left with a "HUH. instead of a "really makes you think. and it's frustrating to see a film like this set up so many pins and then chicken out of knocking 'em down. On the bright side, I did learn that if your live-in governess job involves playing nice with a kid who seems to be able to find spiders anywhere in his house whenever he wants, it's not worth it.  Need help finding something to watch? Synopsis A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the deaths of their parents. A modern take on Henry James' novella "The Turn of the Screw. Cast Crew Details Genres Director Producers Writers Editors Cinematography Production Design Costumes Studios Language Alternative Title Popular reviews More Had to support Brooklynn Prince on opening weekend! And Brooklynn is great of course) Overall, I think the big problem with the film is the script. There were script issues that required some reshoots and I guess the studio simply couldn't figure out how to save it. But besides that, the performances are very good and Floria Sigismondi has a strong command of the visuals. And quite honestly, I was satisfied with just watching Mackenzie Davis for 90 minutes. DP David Ungaro lights her wonderfully and she becomes hypnotic. very much like the genre starlets of yesteryear. If you think about the Italian giallo films for instance, many are nonsensical and rely simply on a beautiful woman in peril, walking… SO many bad things i could say about this, so let me focus on the positive: it features a soccer mommy song. thank you This review may contain spoilers. Apparently Finn Wolfhard has a group of crazy fans from Reddit or something? Who knows, but lets just ignore them for now. That being said, Finn is solid, and Brooklynn Prince is just the sweetest. The Florida Project is a wonderful film, and she adds a lot to The Turning. She is a fun-loving sweet girl and provides a nice burst of energy whenever shes on screen. The film needs as much as it can get in the fun department because its a complete drag from beginning to end. Within this… Hey! Carey and Chad Hayes! You forgot to write an ending! Hey! You forgot to end your movie! Oh god they have AirPods in they cant hear me Recent reviews monkey ckenzie Davis hot. Movie oh This review may contain spoilers. The Turning has great colors to choose from but produces a sloppy, ugly canvas. This film suffers from a confusing ending and lack of clarity as to what the director intended you to take away. Pros. Acting     * Barbara Marten as Mrs. Grose * Setting     * Mansion the movie was set in was creepy and a great choice overall * Relied on building a tense atmosphere rather than loud jump scares (like the movie Get Out. The tense atmosphere is not only harder to craft but makes the movie scarier. Writing     * It was hard to ever see where the movie was going (at first I thought Mrs. Grose was evil) and… I cant believe we finally got the dark backstory of Thing from The Addams Family  Spoiler hes a pervert Everyones good in it, its just not very good. Too obvious to be interesting or scary. (The ghosts are cringy, just not in the good way. It seems obvious which of the two endings the studio demanded they ALSO shoot. And thats a shame — because I liked the last two minutes and closing credit sequence more than all the rest of it. They forgot to end the movie Some content warning before you watch: rape, abuse, drowning, mild blood, gas lighting. The ending is abrupt, yes. The film is short, yes. But holy shit if this movie didn't keep me on the edge of my seat, constantly turning my head and praying the scene would move on. Personally, the jumpscares caught me off guard and weren't predictable in the slightest. One moment Kate's tucking Flora in and being cute, the next some ghost bitch comes at her through a window. This was a perfect haunting movie that left the end open to interpretation. I enjoy horror movies that make me feel something, this feeling was fear, and it churned my stomach and caused my body to shiver. What was this movie even about? This review may contain spoilers. Effective as a secret operation to get 10th grade students to read their English curriculum. What did this dead old white guy Henry James have to say about the MeToo movement? Why does Henry James perfectly reflect the femme punk sensibility? How tightly constructed are James' jump scares? Has a few constructive points to make about how a gentle, turn-the-other-cheek approach is the best way to deal with children, but, no, THE CHILDREN HATE YOU AND THEY WILL ALWAYS HATE YOU. Popular Lists More 2020 Every movie that gets a wide/Streaming service release (in the US) in 2020 RANKED from my most favorite to least….

She looked good fat i hate when people like him do that. Im sure its gonna be scary but when I saw the hand I just started laughing because I thought of the Adams family. Im here and havent watched the movie! I just dont want to watch it 😅. This is like been made by Dont Hug Me Im Scared” production. This scene sounds nuts on my surround sound system. Room shaking scene. The turning stone. The turning ending. The turning release date. Trailer is bad but Background music looks decent.

I respect the composer going for something different and weird, but it didn't work. This is why Chris is the best reviewer. He gives everything a fair shot, and understands why certain decisions may have been made and gives credit for trying different things. So many might have said wtf ghost guitars this is sooo duuuumb but even though he thinks it doesn't work, he still gives it a chance. After a lot of soul searching I have decided to close my practice in order to pursue other interests. I would like to extend a BIG thank you to all the wonderful clients I have had the pleasure of working with over these past years and I wish each of you every success and happiness in the future! Many blessings, Paul. Not gonna lie, this movie looks like its gonna be a flop.
